It's happened again. This time with a beader on flickr. She refuses to buy the patterns or even acknowledge me as the designer.

Just because someone posts a photograph of a beaded cuff online somewhere does not make it okay to copy that design. It is ALWAYS ethically wrong and often legally wrong as well. Just don't do it! Buy the pattern! Ask the designer's permission. But NEVER just copy something because you like it and have the minimal skill set required to create a copy of an original. Don't do it!

Copying is not the sincerest form of flattery, especially not to a professional artist: it is an insult!

I somehow managed to make the time to not only come up with a new pattern but to also get the "test run" cuff beaded for this Tuesday's Pattern. If you've been following my work at all, you know that I love playing with circles. I had a blast with this one! The inspiration for it was some sequin waste (otherwise known as punchinella) ribbon that I purchased years ago.

It seems we have exceeded the "Fair Access Policy Threshold" for our HughesNet internet service, which means that my internet connection will be slower than dial-up speeds until early tomorrow morning :( Thursday's Treasur(i)es will have to wait until Friday.

Last August, I was inspired by some fabric I saw to create

I was looking at it the other day and had one of my "what if" moments. The result is

The original hadn't been up on Etsy for more than an hour this afternoon when it sold to an awesome return customer. The listing is now for a "made to order" version of the cuff, in case you're interested.

And if, instead, you'd like to make one for yourself, the pattern is up now as well:

Don't feel limited to white and gold for this. The possibilities for color combos are tremendous with this pattern...you could use up to 16 different beads here! And as a special treat, I've marked the pattern so that you can easily create a 0.6" wide or a 1.2" bracelet instead of the almost 2" wide cuff pictured.

If you've had any doubts about how lucky I am, this week's twelve (yes! 12!) treasury appearances should put those to rest for good.

I captured my first screenshot of a Sand Fibers treasury appearance on July 23, 2007. (This one was extra special because it also made it to the Etsy front page.)

Since then I have captured 1004 more screenshots of treasuries that featured my work. And those were "only" the treasuries I actually happened to see; I suspect I missed a few over the last two years. Even so, this means that I have averaged more than 1 treasury per day for the last 27 months. I happen to think that this is pretty dog-gone amazing.

Last week, in response to a challenge (as if a new pattern every Tuesday wasn't enough of a challenge on its own), I started playing with the pattern a little, and this is the result:

The colors were in response to a challenge for Bead Art Originals members to come up with an eggplant and olive (and ONLY eggplant and olive) creation to include in an upcoming mosaic for our blog (more on that later in the week). I was asked if I had a pattern for the wide version of my African Mudcloth cuff. Well, I do try to please whenever possible, so here it is.

Wide African Mudcloth Inspired Peyote Cuff I - For Personal Use Only PDF Pattern

No, this is not instead of my Tuesday's Pattern for next week. The cuff for that pattern is complete, and it and the pattern will be listed on Tuesday. Here's a little preview.

I also want to clarify that, while I no longer keep active listings for them in my stores, all my patterns are available in "for commercial use" editions. Just contact me and I'll get a listing up for you right away. The cost of these is only 4 times the cost of the respective "for personal use only" editions. If you have already bought a "for personal use only" edition and would like to upgrade to commercial use, I will credit you the cost of the first pattern.

All my patterns are also available in "teaching packages." All you need to do is contact me and I will reserve both a "for personal use only" edition and a "for commercial use" edition of the pattern for you. After you've paid, I send them to you with a cover email in which I grant you permission to teach the class under the condition that you provide each of your students a full copy of the "for personal use only" edition along with whatever other materials you choose to prepare for the class. Easy peasy.

Tuesday's Pattern (#2) - Show Me the Money!

Yay! So far, so good. I got the second pattern for this new regular feature listed this morning. But before I could do that, I had to test drive it for you:

Show Me the Money!, part of The Iconographs Series

The pattern beads up fairly quickly and is fun and easy to follow (if I do say so myself). I used a rather sophisticated color scheme (24 kt bright gold-plated and dark steel delicas) for my version, but there's nothing to say you couldn't do it in hot pink on purple; after all, this can hardly be considered a serious piece, regardless of the color choices. And if three dollar signs seem like a bit much, why not bead the cuff using just one? You're the boss! :)

The Tocadora has a special history behind it. A few weeks ago, my wonderful, talented friend Jennifer of Tocadora Leather posted the most amazing leather cuff: Monster Mash

I fell in love with it instantly and finally bought it for myself last week. Not unexpectedly, it was even better in person!

I decided I had to create something similar with my beads (with her permission, of course). And so was born The Tocadora!

None too soon either, because my 10-month old monster puppy destroyed Monster Mash yesterday morning. No worries, however, because Jennifer--fantastic soul that she is!--has already created a replacement cuff for me, despite the fact she is sick right now.) That same puppy also appropriated The Tocadora, but damage was limited to the last inch, mainly under the toggle and so I was able to remove and replace that section. Lucky dog!

And, yes, The Tocadora will definitely be one of my Tuesday's Patterns in the future! I had so much fun beading this up that I'm really looking forward to exploring various colorways for it.

Someone who looks out for me sent me a message with this link this morning. It seems that Sand Fibers has been written up as one of the "Five Best Jewelry Shops on Etsy"! While I'm honored to read this, I'm also firmly grounded in the reality that it's not really so...but a girl can dream! :D

That article is such a lovely little send off for October which has been an incredible month for Sand Fibers.

I reached my 700th and then 750th (and then some!) sale on Etsy.
Sand Fibers has had its best month in terms of number of sales on Etsy (not to jinx it: but we may hit a big round number before midnight tomorrow).
Last night, the 400th fan signed up on my Facebook Fan Page - http://facebook.com/SandFibersArt .
This blog will have had its 37,000th visitor by the end of the month (I'm only 4 shy of that, so I don't think I'm being overly optimistic).
The etsy store hit 3,300 hearts at the beginning of the month.

Tuesday's Patttern

I am officially declaring "Tuesday's Triangle" closed. I have done those posts (and the accompanying beading, of course) for more than a year, which is longer than I had intended. Since I missed some weeks, I suspect that I did not achieve my original goal of 52 new triangles, but I'm sure I came pretty darn close. (I may revisit triangles on a monthly basis...I'm still ruminatin' about that one.)

The end of one regular feature seems like the perfect time to introduce a new one:

Tuesday's Pattern

I will do my best to publish a new pattern every Tuesday. While I am leaving the duration of this feature open-ended, just in case I find myself unable to continue after only a few months, I do hope to simply make this part of my routine. It will be a challenge, but a good challenge ;)

To start this new feature, I have a very special new pattern with a very special purpose.

You may have noted that this pattern is actually for both personal and commercial use, for half the cost of what I would normally charge for the commercial editions of my patterns. My friend and self-employed artist Beate Knappe is still struggling with the vet bills (over $4,000)after sweet Jeannie's encounter with a moving vehicle. To help her out, I will donate $7 of the sale of this pattern, whenever it sells, for however many copies it sells. No deadline. No special comment on your part. I will just forward that money to her every time this pattern sells. Simple. Uncomplicated. I will give her the Etsy user name of the beaders who purchase this, so that she knows where to send good thoughts ;)

Unexpected Inspiration

A few weeks ago, my Bead Art Originals teammate and friend Mak of MAKUstudio listed this glorious Raku Copper Ohm pendant.

My mind, as it is apt to do, did an immediate "What if?" and I added a certain cuff to my To Do list. On the way out of last week's I-can't-bead-from-a-pattern period, I was able to take that particular item off my list and put it on Etsy instead:

Tuesday's Triangle and We Have a Winner!

In my I-can't-work-from-a-pattern phase last week, I created a wonderful bronze bead soup. Seven different bronze delicas, ranging from light metallic to matte iris, resulted in a gorgeous bead banded. But it was lacking something, so, knowing that I would require a triangle for today, I revisited the design I originally made for Fiery Gotham a month ago, with a totally different "feel."

The first photograph may seem over-exposed but it accurately reflects the beads. Go figure. I'll get this photography bit down, one of these days/weeks/months/years. Just you wait and see! ;p
