Totally Turquoise

Totally Turquoise Architecture, that is...

Totally Turquoise Architecture Peyote Cuff Bracelet (2382)

Totally Turquoise Architecture Peyote Cuff Bracelet (2382)

I started on a new medication, a muscle relaxer, a few days ago and wasn't sure that I could bead anything following one of my patterns without beading in a few unwelcomed mistakes. But I can't NOT BEAD, I just really can't. It's like water, food, and sleep for me: absolutely essential. So I picked my favorite color and spent several hours with it. We had fun together ;D

Thursday's Treausur(i)es post will follow later today.

The Tale of the Cosmic Collar

When Eve Lynch of KrakenMosaics contacted me about collaborating on a “bold neckpiece” using her comet cabochon, several possible designs came to mind almost immediately, all of which I had to file away when the cabochon arrived.

Nothing I had thought of would do this lively mosaic justice. I knew that the comet pattern in the cab had to dictate where I took this.

I began with a foundation of mottled black cotton fused to a strong stabilizer on which I outlined stitched the individual mosaic pieces of the comet pattern.

Next, I “seated” the cabochon in the center, encasing it in a beadwoven, peyote-stitch bezel.

Cosmic Collar work in progress

I had wanted to fill in the stitched mosaic outlines with bead embroidery using beautiful silver-lined seed beads, but discovered that these bright and sparkling beads would overpower the cab, relegating it to the background when the foreground was its rightful place. To echo the colors (the orange, red, and blues) in the cab, I instead used colored beading thread with clear seed beads. These threads provide the color while the beads provide ethereal sparkle without distracting from the cab.

4-6-09 Cosmic Collar Progress Update

Because the cosmos is not one shade of black, I used many different finishes and sizes of black and near-black beads to continue the mosaic theme throughout the rest of the collar. I backed the entire collar with black ultra suede and created a simple beaded ruffle edging around the entire piece.

4-15-09 Cosmic Collar almost done

As a final surprise, I wove a rather lacey, beaded toggle clasp.

I sent the collar back to Eve almost exactly one month after I received that beautiful cabochon. It's next stop is Exeter, UK, for the Heaven's Above exhibit this summer that coincides with the International Year of Astronomy.

This was fun!

Tuesday's Triangle

If it's Tuesday, it must be triangle time at Sand Fibers!

Pretty in Pink Peyote Triangle Ring - Size 7.5 (2381)

I don't often work with pink. Maybe it's because I don't wear pink, I don't decorate with pink, I don't think pink. Whatever the reason, pink is not featured much in my life or my work. So how did this piece come about? you ask.

On Saturday, I received a custom order for a pink version of my Bargello Hearts cuff, so I got out my (surprisingly substantial) stash of pink beads to make my selections. I saw these two beautiful silver-lined pinks next to each other...and another Tuesday's Triangle was born.

Pretty in Pink Peyote Triangle Ring - Size 7.5 (2381)

I hope your Tuesday is a great one! Be well and get going!

Okay, back to BAO Item of the Week details: purchase and pay for the cuff by midnight on Sunday and you'll get free shipping and a surprise gift. You won't be disappointed; I promise.
